Emerging markets hedge funds posted strong performance gains in October, reversing sharp losses from September as emerging market (EM) economies and assets continue to experience volatility relating to the European sovereign debt crisis. The HFRX Total Emerging Markets Index gained +4.1 percent in October following a decline of -5.0 percent in September; while intra-month volatility was even more pronounced in specific regions, including Latin America and Russia.

CHICAGO (October 19, 2011) – Hedge funds posted the fourth worst quarterly performance in industry history in 3Q11, as a combination of uncertainty regarding the European sovereign debt crisis and weakening economic data contributed to volatility across equity, credit, commodities and currencies. These performance declines reduced total hedge fund industry capital by $85 billion, according to today’s release of the HFR Global Hedge Fund Industry Report: 3Q11.

The pastor at the centre of the Koran-burning row says the imam behind plans to build an Islamic centre near Ground Zero has ignored his deadline to get in touch. Pastor Terry Jones and his colleague Pastor K A. Paul had given the imam two hours to call them on one of two telephone numbers read out live on television. They deadline passed just after 8.15pm without “any word from the imam or his team".

12 killed in military base shooting

Twelve people have been killed and at least 31 injured after a soldier went on a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood military base in Texas. Base commander Lieutenant-General Bob Cone says the gunman was killed during the incident at the facility, while two other soldiers were apprehended as suspects. The base is locked down.

New claims for jobless insurance

Wall Street has staged a substantial rally thanks to better than expected US jobs and productivity data, and Australian markets are likely to follow the buoyant lead. The number of workers filing new claims for jobless insurance fell more than expected last week to a 10-month low. Productivity surged at an annual rate of 9.5 per cent, improving the outlook for both the economy and inflation.
