British Labour party is finding leader and Ed Miliband has beaten his older brother David Miliband in the race to be Labour leader. Brothers Ed and David Miliband sat anxiously amongst the three other candidates; Dianne Abbott, Andy Burnham and Ed Balls as the results were announced in Manchester. At 4.50PM, the ex energy secretary rose to victory beating his brother by just 1.3% with Ed Balls taking third and Dianne Abbott last.
David stood quickly to congratulate and applaud his brother and moving to hug him as the crowd applauded the new Labour leader. Speaking shortly after his win, the new Labour leader explained that he represented “a new generation” in politics.
About three million people are expected to have voted with Ballot papers being verified and counted by the independent Electoral Reform Services. Ed Miliband has won the Labour leadership after narrowly beating brother David in a dramatic run-off vote ahead of the party's conference.
d won by just over 1% from former foreign secretary David after second, third and fourth preference votes came into play. He said a "new generation" had taken charge of Labour and it had to change.
Ed Balls was third, Andy Burnham fourth and Diane Abbott last in the ballot of MPs, members and trade unionists. Mr Miliband, 40, replaces acting leader Harriet Harman in the contest triggered by the resignation of Gordon Brown.
