Restrictions to the number of pieces of luggage passengers are allowed to check-in are set to be eased next week. From January 7th 2008, the Department for Transport (DfT) will lift restrictions on the one piece of hand luggage rule at 22 of the UK's largest airports, including Heathrow, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester. Smaller British airports such as Bristol, East Midlands, Liverpool and Luton will continue to have the restrictions in place, as will London Gatwick where engineering work is continuing to get the new technology in place. "At Gatwick Airport, significant engineering works are underway, which will allow the restriction to be lifted in the near future.
As part of a phased approach, from January 7th, passengers connecting flights through Gatwick's South Terminal will be able to travel with more than one piece of hand bag if their airline allows. This will also apply for passengers on connecting flights only via the North Terminal from February 11th," BAA explained.
A spokesman for BAA added: "We will be helping to advertise the changes in Government baggage restrictions at our airports, but it is important that passengers check with their airline before travelling as carriers have different policies governing the number of items of hand baggage which may be taken in to the aircraft cabin. "To help passengers further, we will also be asking airlines to ensure that passengers clearly understand airline baggage policies at the check-in points, before they pass through security."
The one bag rule was originally put in place in August 2006 in an effort to try and lessen the threat from liquid explosives. However, due to new additional security measures being put in place at the larger airports, such stringent baggage rules are no longer necessary as new equipment will allow more bags to be screened. The ban on liquids will also continue as before.
For the rest of the airports to have their restrictions lifted, they will have to satisfy the DfT they have the facilities to handle any extra bags safely. However, not all airlines are taking advantage of the change in security measures. British Airways will reintroduce its two pieces of hand luggage allowance at all UK airports that allow it, while Easyjet will continue to maintain its policy on one piece of hand luggage only, claiming they want to avoid customer confusion.
