Heathrow chaos makes British Airways change plans
A series of technical glitches at the new Terminal 5 billed as Britain’s largest free standing building and among the most innovative airports in the world led BA to cancel more than 600 flights over a period of 12 days. While part of the problem was a result of technological failures, BA has indicated that “staff familiarization”–or lack thereof also played a role in the massive delays. BA’s CEO, Willie Walsh, who has come under fire for the Terminal 5 debacle, told journalists that the delay in the transfer of the remaining flights to the new hub was “in the interests of customers.
” Walsh went on to observe that T-5 is finally “working well,” but he suggested that the carrier must be entirely confident that the hub would be able to deal with a dramatic increase in passengers, before all long-haul flights could be transferred from other terminals.
British Midland was less than impressed by BA’s decision to delay the transfer of all of its flights, with Nigel Turner, bmi’s CEO, calling this an “outrageous announcement” on the part of the ’s flag carrier. BMI launches most of its flights from Terminal 1, and BA’s delay in transferring all of its flights, may adversely affect the airport’s second largest airline.
