Pakistan's opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been killed

Pakistan's opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been killed in a gun attack followed by a suicide bombing at a rally in the city of Rawalpindi. She died in hospital from injuries sustained in Thursday's attack, which also killed at least 20 other people. The blast occurred as Bhutto left a political rally where she addressed thousands of supporters ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for January 8. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf condemned the killing and called for calm, according to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.

The British Queen Elizabeth II started her own channel on the popular website YouTube, reported the British press on the basis of information from Buckingham Palace. The online video service called “The Royal Channel” intends on broadcasting the Queen’s 50 traditional Christmas message, reported the Observer on Sunday. Until two years ago, the Queen did not know how to use a computer, and was introduced to YouTube phenomenon by her grandchildren princess Beatrice and Eugene, reports the Observer.

The Queen officially became Britain's oldest reigning monarch on Thursday, but completely ignored the milestone. At 5pm Her Majesty overtook the record set by her great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria, who died in 1901 aged 81 years and 243 days. However, there were no special events to mark the occasion. The Queen left Buckingham Palace yesterday morning for her Sandringham estate where she will spend Christmas. Victoria remains the longest reigning British monarch, serving for 63 years, but the Queen could break this record on September 9, 2015.

Britain on Tuesday unveiled new visa rule proposals

Britain on Tuesday unveiled new visa rule proposals that include making families pay a hefty cash bond of upto 1,000 pounds to ensure that their foreign visitors leave on time, a move that will affect thousands of immigrants from South Asia. Proposals for the new rules, considered the biggest shake-up of the immigration system in Britain's history, also include reducing the standard six-month tourist visa to three months. Releasing consultation papers connected to the proposals, Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said visitors to the UK will have to leave within three months. Byrne, who is visiting India in February, told newsmen the government also planned to create a specific business and specialist visa and a specific visa for one-off events such as Olympics.

Mr Darwin was arrested on suspicion of fraud

The wife of John Darwin, who was believed to have died in a canoeing mishap until he turned up alive on Saturday, has acknowledged she knew he was still alive after the "accident."  Sources told Sky News that Ms. Darwin also said the couple's two sons were not involved. "It looks as if I am going to be left without a husband, a home or a family now," Ms. Darwin told the Daily Mail. According to the paper, she was preparing to return home to "face the music," adding, "I don't want to live my life as a fugitive." Ms. Darwin said she didn't know at first that her husband hadn't actually died in 2002, saying "it was years later" that she found out. She said she wasn't sure what made him go to police, although she knew he was returning to England.

Murder of schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton

A handyman appeared in court today charged with the murder of schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton, whose body was found in a garden in Kent. Peter Tobin, 61, appeared in private at Linlithgow sheriff court, West Lothian, at lunchtime. Detectives confirmed yesterday that the body uncovered at the rear of a house in Irvine Drive, Margate, was that of Vicky, 15, who was last seen in February 1991 close to her home in Bathgate, West Lothian.  The house had initially been searched by officers from Essex police investigating the disappearance of another teenager, Dinah McNicol, who vanished six months later.
