Scottish woman aged 26 murdered on holiday in New Zealand

A young Scottish woman has been murdered in New Zealand in what police have described as a "ghastly attack". Karen Aim, 26, from Orkney, was assaulted while walking home from a night out and her body was discovered in the early hours of yesterday. She was found by chance by police investigating a school break-in. As they searched the grounds, their torch beams illuminated the dying victim. An ambulance was called and, according to reports, she managed to whisper her name to police. She died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Ms Aim had been working in a resort called Wairakei in the town of Taupo on New Zealand's North Island. A friend described her as "the sweetest person I ever met". She said the Ms Aim had fallen in love with the country when she had visited for a holiday.

British Airways plans to launch a new service to the Antalya Alanya region

British Airways plans to launch a new service to the Antalya region on April 10th. The introduction of new flights to Turkey is set to trigger huge interest amongst overseas property buyers. In addition, after its purchase of GB Airways, EasyJet will soon begin offering services to the south coast of Turkey. A new airport is also being developed in the Gazipasa region, which is likely to help encourage British investors to consider Turkey as a viable market. There has been no confirmation what routes will go to and from the facility, but the introduction of flights will definitely encourage further interest in the region and other surrounding areas.

Britney Spears barred from seeing children

A court commissioner has awarded sole custody of Britney Spears' two young sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline. He has also suspended the troubled US pop star's visitation rights. Los Angeles commissioner Scott Gordon issued a ruling the day after Spears was hauled away from her home to a hospital by paramedics after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit. Mr Gordon ordered another hearing to be held on January 14. Federline had previously been awarded temporary custody of two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James because Spears has defied court orders, resulting in limitations on her visitation.

Restrictions on the one piece of hand luggage rule at 22 of UK airports

Restrictions to the number of pieces of luggage passengers are allowed to check-in are set to be eased next week. From January 7th 2008, the Department for Transport (DfT) will lift restrictions on the one piece of hand luggage rule at 22 of the UK's largest airports, including Heathrow, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester. Smaller British airports such as Bristol, East Midlands, Liverpool and Luton will continue to have the restrictions in place, as will London Gatwick where engineering work is continuing to get the new technology in place. "At Gatwick Airport, significant engineering works are underway, which will allow the restriction to be lifted in the near future.

Pakistan's opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been killed in a gun attack followed by a suicide bombing at a rally in the city of Rawalpindi. She died in hospital from injuries sustained in Thursday's attack, which also killed at least 20 other people. The blast occurred as Bhutto left a political rally where she addressed thousands of supporters ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for January 8. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf condemned the killing and called for calm, according to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.

The Queen officially became Britain's oldest reigning monarch on Thursday, but completely ignored the milestone. At 5pm Her Majesty overtook the record set by her great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria, who died in 1901 aged 81 years and 243 days. However, there were no special events to mark the occasion. The Queen left Buckingham Palace yesterday morning for her Sandringham estate where she will spend Christmas. Victoria remains the longest reigning British monarch, serving for 63 years, but the Queen could break this record on September 9, 2015.

Britain on Tuesday unveiled new visa rule proposals that include making families pay a hefty cash bond of upto 1,000 pounds to ensure that their foreign visitors leave on time, a move that will affect thousands of immigrants from South Asia. Proposals for the new rules, considered the biggest shake-up of the immigration system in Britain's history, also include reducing the standard six-month tourist visa to three months. Releasing consultation papers connected to the proposals, Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said visitors to the UK will have to leave within three months. Byrne, who is visiting India in February, told newsmen the government also planned to create a specific business and specialist visa and a specific visa for one-off events such as Olympics.

Mr Darwin was arrested on suspicion of fraud

The wife of John Darwin, who was believed to have died in a canoeing mishap until he turned up alive on Saturday, has acknowledged she knew he was still alive after the "accident."  Sources told Sky News that Ms. Darwin also said the couple's two sons were not involved. "It looks as if I am going to be left without a husband, a home or a family now," Ms. Darwin told the Daily Mail. According to the paper, she was preparing to return home to "face the music," adding, "I don't want to live my life as a fugitive." Ms. Darwin said she didn't know at first that her husband hadn't actually died in 2002, saying "it was years later" that she found out. She said she wasn't sure what made him go to police, although she knew he was returning to England.
