Brown orders no pay rise for ministers
Government ministers will forgo this year's pay rises for 2008/9 as Gordon Brow tries to get the message across that public sector pay must be restrained during the current economic uncertainty.
The Prime Minister has also rejected a recommendation from Sir John Baker's review into salaries which would have given MPs an additional £650 payment on top of their annual pay rises for each of the next three years.
However, Mr Brown must hope that MPs accept this dampening down of their salaries when they vote on the issue on July 3.
The Prime Minister has accepted recommendations from the senior salaries review body for pay rises next year of 1.5% for senior civil servants, 2.2% for senior military officers and very senior NHS managers, and slightly over 2.5% for judges.
Politicians claim they need to “catch up” with other professionals and some greedy backbenchers are even calling for £100,000 a year while pay deals for hard-pressed workers across the country are failing to keep pace with rocketing prices for food and fuel. 18/06/08
