WordPress 2.9, the free and open-source content management system have announced that version 2.9 will focus on media management features. A recent poll on their blog asked users what they would like best to improve the way images, video and audio are handled. Let’s face it, the way that images have to be managed is a pretty dire system.
Plugins like Next Gen Gallery have somewhat improved the way one inserts galleries and slideshows, but it ain’t easy to upload and insert a single image. When I need to put in one image, I will upload them via FTP and then insert from URL.
The top four voted features were: Media Albums, Easier Embeds, Basic Image Editing and Post Thumbnails. I really like the Post Thumbnails option: imagine just having a section, like the ‘Categories’ or ‘Discussion’ ones in the post editor, which enables you to upload the thumbnail for the post, rather than having to FTP them, and enter the URL in to a custom field called ‘thumbnail’.
However, the second question: “Rate each feature, going from top priority down to definitely not for implementation priority.” Easier embeds was rated top priority. The final question asked users if they thought if the media features should be
•Should be put in to the core of WordPress, as the rubbish system is now
•Should be put in to a plugin, which comes in the wp-content/plugins folder – so it’s bundled with WordPress
•Should be put in to a plugin, which is in the plugin directory, available to download free if you want it 56% of voters thought that it should be in the core, where 38% thought it should be in a bundled plugin, and a small 6% thought it should be as a separate plugin.
You can read the full results here on the WordPress Development blog. The date for the release of 2.9 is still quite vague, however it is expected that it will be sometime in the late months of 2009.
I hope that they remember that they delayed the change of the admin design from 2.8 to 2.9! To give the interface the attention it is due, and to take seriously some of the interface feedback around usability and accessibility, we’re going to leave the looks alone for 2.8. It’s our guess that a revised style will make into 2.9 early in the development cycle to allow us plenty of time for user testing and revision.
One of the most popular blogging platform the WordPress in its latest version 2.9 has included the trash functionality similar to the recycle bin. The common problem faced by most blogger when using WordPress, is the accidental deletion of posts which they find it impossible to undo. The most recent WordPress releases did have the revision feature that would save post as version.
If the user updates the post WordPress would save the original plus the new update as a revision, this would enable users to revert back to the ordinal if required. By including the Recycle Bin functionality in the 2.9 version, WordPress has made life easier for its blogger.
Recycle Bin function will work in the similar way as it does in an operating system. A users who intentionally or accidentally deletes a post can easily restore it from the trash area. All deleted posts are retained for a period of 30 days by default after which they are permanently removed. WordPress 2.9 gives the users an option to control the trash bin by editing the wp-config.php file.
The number of days that the trash bin can retain a deleted item before permanent deletion can be changed by using the following settings. define(’EMPTY_TRASH_DAYS’, 20); // keep items for 20 days define(’EMPTY_TRASH_DAYS’, 0); // Disable feature You can always get the latets version by visiting wordpress.org or if you already have a site you can wait for update message from your admin panel.
