What they all wanted to get their hands on, without delay, was the innovative 3D screen which renders games in 3D without the need to wear special glasses.
This is done using the ‘parallax barrier’ technology in which LCD images are overlaid with tiny gaps allowing the image to be seen from slightly different angles in each eye. Inside the hardware are also three cameras, two of which allow the user to take 3D images.
The Nintendo 3DS also incorporates a new wireless “StreetPass” mode allowing the console to sense other 3DS gamers playing nearby, and allowing the two consoles to exchange game details and scores.
The hand-held device is in the usual clam-shell format with the upper screen showing the 3D game and the lower a touchscreen for which a telescopic stylus is provided. When the device went on sale in Japan it was an instant sell-out and the manufacturers expect the same to be the case in the UK.
