In the last week of June 2011, it was noted that there was a forest fire in the Yeshilkent Road area of Altinkum, the cause of the fire is not known, but the smoke could be seen throughout the whole of Altinkum and Yesilkent area, the locals and holiday maker’s alike watch the smoke drift across the skyline as they sat on the beach watching the smoke above the sea.

It became apparent that the fire could have been extremely serious and could have been spreading rapidly, the local authorities deemed it necessary to use air support to put out the fire. There were around 4 helicopters in the air for 4 hours or more continually trying to stop the fire from spreading and put it out.

Due to the severity of the fire, it cause huge problems for not only the hotel areas of Yesilkent but large numbers of residential properties and also business throughout the area as the power was cut for a number of hours disrupting not only businesses but local life too.

A group of tourist said they had noticed the fire whilst on Yesilkent Beach and on the return to the villa, they were staying at they had notice that the there still appeared to be a lot of smoke and they had seen the air support in the air for rather a long time so they had gone out for a walk to see what was going on.

They had lot come across many others doing the same thing. It appears that the fire had become a hot talking point for that day and had many people discussing the cause, people had stated that they thought that it was the local refuse being burnt but others state that it was not in the correct location, the overall outcome seems to have been put down to a local forest fire with the cause being unknown.
