The newly-elected Greek PM George Papandreou arrived Friday in Istanbul on his first foreign trip since being sworn in as PM on Tuesday. Papandreou made his first overseas trip to Turkey on the occasion of the informal meeting of Foreign Ministers of South-East European Countries Process.
He was welcomed by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport. Davutoglu and Papandreou had a closed-door meeting at the airport at which they were thought to have discussed Cyprus and other issues.
Later in the day, the Papandreou will meet with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Papandreou was sworn in Tuesday as the new Prime Minister of Greece after his party PASOK won Sunday’s Parliamentary Elections. Greece and Turkey have been at hammer heads regarding Cyprus since 1974.
Currently the island is split into two with Greece controlling the South and Turkey the North. However alot of stuff wasnt on his agenda because he was want to visit old friends grave Ismail Cem. Papandreou's visit, Davutoğlu also visited Cem's grave and prayed there.
Speaking to reporters, Davutoğlu pledged that Cem's efforts for improved friendship between Greece and Turkey would be continued, while appreciating Papandreou's kind gesture in visiting Cem's grave.
This was his first trip and he choice to come and visit Turkey first.
