Getting married in Turkey or want to know about how forigners can get married in Altinkum Didim and Akbuk or in Turkey. “Dear Berk, I read your column and wanted to email you, too. I came from Ukraine to Turkey on Oct. 10, 2010 and this January I will get married to a Turkish citizen. Now I have my tourist visa, which is valid till January. We wondered what documents we need in order to get married here in Turkey and, after getting married, when can I get Turkish citizenship?”

The marriage procedure is governed under the Turkish Civil Code and relevant regulations. Foreigners can get married in Turkey very easily when the below conditions are met.

According to the code, persons wishing to get married should have the capacity for marriage. Thus, the man and woman should have “completed the age of 17,” meaning they should be 18 years old, and have a non-impaired mental capacity (which means neither person should be deprived of their ability to reason due to things such as mental illness, feebleness of mind or intoxication).

In addition to having the capacity for marriage, people must abide by bars against marriage. Regarding this, marriage between close relatives and -- because Turkey is a secular country polygamy are not acceptable.

In other words, only if a previous marriage ends is the second one valid. Another bar is that a woman who was previously married cannot get married for 300 days after her previous marriage’s dissolution.

In general, the marriage procedure is governed under the Turkish Civil Code. Couples should apply to the marriage office where one of them resides. This application can be made either by completing a statement of intent to wed in writing or verbally.

Both people should provide identification, a statement of intent to wed, a copy of identity register and certificate of capacity to marry, showing whether the spouses are single, divorced or widowed, a health report proving that there is no obstruction to marriage, passport-size photos, etc. There are some other details, which you can find by applying to the local authority to perform the marriage.

The circumstances regarding acquisition of citizenship are governed under the Turkish Citizenship Code. Turkish citizenship can be obtained either at birth or after birth by decision of a relevant authority, which marriage with a Turk falls under.

Turkish citizenship can be acquired through marriage by the candidate’s application, along with meeting certain preconditions such as the marriage lasting for at least three years and “no involvement in actions against national security or the public order.”

I still receive some questions about the validity of religious marriages in Turkey. I think Turkey still needs to improve on this matter.
