Turkish Raki is now going to Europe almost all over the World soon because Diageo plans to make its biggest purchase in more than a decade by acquiring Turkish Mey Icki in a transaction that values Turkey’s largest maker of Raki at 3.3 billion Turkish lira ($2.1 billion). Turkish Raki very well known, the aniseed-flavoured drink that Mey Içki specialises in, is a popular Turkish aperitif and also knows as lion milk. Shareholders in Diageo will hope the deal whets Paul Walsh’s appetite for similar deals, which will allow the company to move into emerging markets for alcohol.

Turkey is a good place to start because Raki sells alot and its know as traditional spirite in Turkey. Mey Içki has the market for Raki, Turkey’s most popular drink and where good chats starts in cafes, bars. It has an 80 per cent share of Raki sales, equivalent to 20 per cent of the total alcoholic beverage market.

Diageo same time, the owner of Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky, aims to make acquisitions in markets where growth is the fastest, CFO Deirdre Mahlan said in an interview this month, after the company reported first-half revenue and profit that missed analysts’ estimates. Mey Icki controls 80 per cent of the market for Raki, according to Diageo. Lion milk might go to all over the World with Diageo soon because it has been very famoust for long time and its very popular drink. You can find Raki in nearly every shop in Turkey and sells alot.

Turkey is a substantial fast growing economy with an increasingly affluent middle class and Diageo products are sold in more than 180 countries around the world.

Turkey`s unofficial national drink Raki is more than a glass of alcohol, it’s an experience in itself because its very strong and you need to be ready for it. Many holidays makers always worry because Raki gets milky color soon as you add some cold water or add some ice..

If you have been to Turkey before certainly you must seen in bars, clubs alot. In Turkey raki is always served in small narrow galss and specialy made for raki, Turks will always add some ice in Raki and certainly this is the best way to drink Raki. Of course same time you can add cold water on top and water will turn Raki to white, which is where the nickname “lion’s milk” comes from because Raki knows as lions milk is well. So if somebody says lions milk you can easily understand what they mean.

In Turkey Raki is traditionally served as an aperitif, to be slowly enjoyed with several appetizers but always this will be meze and many people wont want to drink with out meze. The traditional raki meal varies and can include anything from kebabs to salads most of the time. But mostly two essentials are yellow melon and feta cheese but many people has their on way is well like with salads, bbq and of course fish and sea foods.

Meze in Turkish cuisine is appropriate both for wine and Raki. Mezes are to be consumed in very small quantities since the idea is not to fill the stomach but provide a period of good conversation. Traditionally all mezes are removed before the main course and drinks are not poured beyond this point.

Don’t be surprised to see a bowl of ice on the table with cold drinks if you order Raki in bars, restaurants or clubs in Turkey because you can plop a fresh one into your drink as needed and the water will help take the edge off of your stomach. It’s also common to see a raki glass filled with water sitting next to everyone’s raki also to be sipped on. Many holiday makers and tourist always states that Raki is a has a strong anise flavor much like Greek ouzo and you might be put off on your first taste, which will be easily forgotten as you finish up your first glass and get to a second. Always drink responsible and enjoy cold Raki with Meze. Get ready to see Raki in your local stores soon maybe.
