Ferrari's Felipe Massa won the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul

Ferrari's Felipe Massa won the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul

But there was no stopping Massa who controlled the 58-lap race on the 5.338km track which he clearly loves. Raikkonens lead in the championship was cut to seven points with Massa now second, on countback, from last years runner-up Hamilton. Ferrari extended their lead in the Constructors championship to 19 points over BMW with McLaren two points further back after Finlands Heikki Kovalainen paid for an early pit-stop to finish 12th having started second.

The Finn - who suffered a dreadful crash at the Spanish Grand Prix a fortnight ago - suffered an opening lap puncture after a suspected collision with Raikkonen on the opening lap. Polands Robert Kubica was fourth for BMW just ahead of team-mate German Nick Heidfeld with Spains two-time champion Fernando Alonso sixth for Renault. Red Bulls Australian Mark Webber was seventh and German-born Nico Rosberg eighth for Williams.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa recovered lost ground in the drivers' championship by claiming his third successive victory in the Turkish grand prix from pole position. Massa, who failed to finish the first two races of the season in Australia and Malaysia, kept his cool to win an enthralling tactical duel with Lewis Hamilton, who pitted three times. Kimi Raikkonen, the reigning world champion, finished in third place and remains at the top of the drivers' standings with 35 points. However, Massa and Hamilton now lie just seven points adrift of the Finn, a position that will encourage both drivers after their early-season travails.

"That was just fantastic," said Massa. "It was a very difficult race, with Lewis pushing me hard, but I thought he was light [on fuel] at the start. Then when he pitted ahead of me, my team told me straight away he was on three stops. That was a help because he was very strong and I couldn't hold him."I knew I had a chance because three stops is optimistic, so it was difficult, but we made it. Three wins is great, and I think I can get a passport here now!"
