Fenerbahce 2 PSV Eindhoven 0

Fenerbahce 2 PSV Eindhoven 0

The result keeps Fenerbahce one point behind leaders Internazionale in Group G - the Turks have won two and drawn two of their four games - and extends their recent unbeaten run to 16 games. PSV, meanwhile, are enduring a torrid time. Defeat at the weekend to Heerenveen left them third in the Eredivisie, while this loss leaves them two games to make up the four points separating them from second-place.

Given the frantic moments that lay ahead, this game started in slow fashion. In fact, it took 14 minutes before Jan Kromkamp wasted the first chance of the evening, the defender heading Kenneth Perez's right wing cross wide from close range, Alex looked even less threatening from a free-kick a minute later.

The hosts were looking alarmingly subdued at this stage, Roberto Carlos' misguided free-kick the sole product of their attacking play, but that changed in a spectacular manner shortly afterwards. Gokhan Gonul sounded the warning bell three minutes before the Turks made their breakthrough, the defender bringing a save from Heurelho Gomes when he drove at goal from distance, but PSV took no notice.

It was a decision that they would pay for twice in rapid succession. First, Kazim-Richards collected an Alex pass 25 yards from goal and launched the ball into Gomes' top left corner via the hapless Marcellis, and then, just 20 seconds later, Alex played in Senturk to rifle into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

It was a hammer-blow for the Dutch side and almost got worst four minutes later when Alex, Fenerbahce's top scorer in Europe this season, saw goal from distance but could only blast wide. Perez for PSV and Fener's Alex and Kazim-Richards then took turns to waste half-chances as the first period drew to a close, but after the break there was little doubt as to which team was in charge. Senturk underlined the point with a stunning strike from 30 yards, but, in a rare highlight for PSV, Gomes looked superb in turning the effort around a post.
