Paris Hilton took part in an impromptu belly dance during the Miss Turkey 2008 contest in Istanbul yesterday. The heiress was a judge at the beauty pageant - but she clearly didn't want to be left out of the limelight.

Paris, 27, took to the stage to join a professional belly dancer and was seen twirling and shaking her hips to the music. 'This is my first time judging anything like this,' Paris tells Reuters. Turkish lawmakers lifted the ban on head scarf

The gloves are finally off. After years of sidestepping one of the most sensitive social issues in Turkey, the ruling Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) has moved to lift a ban on young women wearing headscarves at universities. The country's secularists, who see the headscarf as a symbol of political Islam, are up in arms over the proposed reform. The debate is the latest installment in the ongoing and increasingly bitter tug of war between the government and a militantly secularist establishment long used to getting its way.

Turkey And Sweden Turkey played out yet another 0-0, this time while hosting a slightly weakened Sweden side.

Turkey went into the game having had their last three friendlies end in goalless draws and this proved to continue the trend. This was another uneventful fixture and most certainly not for the neutrals. The game was not necessarily boring, but neither did it provide the basic thrills of a competitive game. There was simply not enough at stake for either side to really commit to playing attractive, dynamic football. Neither side fielded their full-strength line-ups that had been seen during the Euro 2008 qualifiers; Turkey had introduced four changes, while Sweden had two debutants and another fairly new player. Both sides made a lot of changes in the second half.
