Turkey smoking ban takes effect today

Smokers across Turkey have sparked up at work and in the health, commercial, social, cultural, sports and entertainment facilities, including the corridors of these buildings. Bars for the last time as the ban on smoking in enclosed public places begins. The new law, which came into effect at 12.00 am, is intended to cut deaths from second-hand smoke. Europe already have similar bans in place. Many venues held farewell events for the final night of smoking on Sunday, while local authorities are preparing to enforce the ban in Turkey. The law also introduces the smoking ban in restaurants, cafeterias and coffeehouses; however, this particular article will not go into effect until 19th July 2009.

Queen Elizabeth leaves Turkey

Britain's Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Phillip on Friday ended a four-day royal visit to Turkey which underlined Britain's strong support for Turkey's bid to join the European Union. At a state banquet on Tuesday the Queen described Turkey as a 'confident and dynamic democracy' which had made great strides in the 36 years since the Queen last visited Turkey. 'For us Turkey is as important now as it has ever been,' the Queen said. In addition to expressing Britain's support for Turkey joining the European Union, the Queen also said the EU was helping Turkey.

The British queen has praised Turkey's EU membership credentials on a rare state visit, amid pageantry reflecting the country's mixture of Islamic and western traditions. "Turkey is uniquely positioned as a bridge between east and west at a crucial time for the European Union and the world in general," the monarch said at a banquet in Ankara on Tuesday (13 May). Queen Elizabeth II will arrive in Turkey today

Queen Elizabeth II will arrive in Turkey today for a four-day official visit, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.The 82-year-old monarch and her 86-year-old husband accepted an invitation from President Abdullah Gül. The queen will be visiting Turkey for only the second time, with her first visit taking place in 1971.According to information provided by the British Consulate General in İstanbul, the queen’s program will include Ankara, Bursa and İstanbul. The queen and Prince Philip will be accompanied by British Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

Brazilian Felipe Massa swept to a hat-trick of Turkish Grand Prix victories from pole position with another domineering display for Ferrari at Istanbul Park. The Brazilian triumphed by 3.7 seconds ahead of McLarens British driver Lewis Hamilton with reigning champion Finn Kimi Raikkonen less than half-a-second behind in third in the other Ferrari. Thousands of Australians and New Zealanders gathered in northwestern Turkey early on Friday to honour the memory of soldiers killed in the 1915 Gallipoli battle, one of the bloodiest in World War I. The dawn ceremony marks the time of the first landings of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) at the Gallipoli peninsula in the ill-fated Allied campaign to take the Dardanelles Strait from the Ottoman Empire. In the ensuing eight months of fighting, about 11 500 Anzac troops were killed, fighting alongside British, Indian and French soldiers. Turkey, the successor of the Ottoman Empire, puts its own losses at some 86 000.

The Turkish Golf Federation has plans to add 100 new golf courses to Turkey’s current scanty tally of less than 20. Golf tourism is already experiencing strong growth in Turkey and revenues should hit 500 million euros by 2010, but now Turkey really means business and intends to take golf giant Spain on head-to-head with the Aegean province of Mugla as its secret weapon. There were 359 federated golf courses in Spain at last count, around 60 of these concentrated along the Costa del Sol generating Málaga province alone 900 million euros in 2006. It’s clear that Turkey has some catching up to do but with one and a half times the area (770,760km² versus 499,542km²), a similar climate thanks to sharing the same latitude.
