| Eight men suspected of shooting 44 people during an engagement ceremony have been taken into custody, accused of killing the betrothed couple - whose wedding they opposed along with relatives and friends in a 15-minute rampage. Two girls survived by concealing themselves beneath the bodies of their slain friends during the shootings in Turkey's impoverished rural southeast, where tribal ties and rivalries can eclipse the power of the state. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack was "the result of a feud between two families". |

| Spain scraped past Turkey to put themselves six points clear at the top of Group 5 and in pole position to qualify for the World Cup next year. | The decision by a Turkish MP to speak Kurdish in his country’s Parliament has provoked uproar and boosted demands that his Kurdish based DTP party be closed down. It is against the law to use the language now spoken by around a fifth of all Turks in any official business. However, in 2002 blanket bans on the use of the language were lifted by the present government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Three years ago the first Kurdish language TV and radio stations were permitted. When the DTP legislator Ahmed Turk chose to break the law Tuesday and midway through a speech switch from Turkish to Kurdish, the TV broadcast of Parliament’s proceedings was cut immediately. |

| Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has lauded Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for taking a stand against Israel’s war on the Palestinians of Gaza. On Thursday, during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Erdogan reproached Israeli President Shimon Peres over the Gaza offensive, saying, “You kill people,” and then stalked off the stage. In a message issued on Saturday, Ahmadinejad said Erdogan’s words were in fact the “cry” of the oppressed Palestinian people and his “courageous action” in the face of the Zionist regime’s “fabrications” created a sensation among justice-seeking people of the world. |
