My Dear Brothers and Sisters of Turkey I have had the great fortune to visit your wonderful country many times. On each occasion I have been astonished by the warmth of your people and the depth of your culture. I hope and pray that I will have the opportunity to return soon. In recent months I have also had the good luck to visit Armenia on several occasions.

I have found the Armenian people to be strong, stoic and proud.

Like you, they are kind, warm and incredibly hospitable. Most of all they are human beings, as you are, as I am. They deserve the same care, consideration and respect as you and me.

But they carry an injury which is the legacy of a Turkish government during the 1915 to 1918 period. I saw during my time in Armenia that the wound is deep.

The nature of the injury is such that the pain will be as damaging to the Turkish soul as much as it will be to the Armenian soul. That is, unless it is healed. Although it is almost 100 years since that time, the damage will continue forever until it is addressed.

You, the current generation of Turkish people were not responsible for what was done to innocent people. You can however act to heal the wound that your ancestors caused. I cannot tell you what you must do. Only your conscience can guide you.

And while your political leaders may act and speak on your behalf, I humbly beg you to do everything in your power to heal this past hurt. I ask you this for your own sakes, as a beautiful people, as well as for your Armenian brothers and sisters. We are all human beings under God.

We are as courageous, powerful, kind, generous and loving as we choose to be. Please do what you can to demonstrate these same qualities to the people of Armenia as you have always shown them to me. Thank you sincerely.
