Where Does Turkey Rank for Mothers on Mother's Day?

Where Does Turkey Rank for Mothers on Mother's Day?

This morning my mother told me that on Mother's Day, during her formative years, anyone who went to church received a red carnation to wear if their mother was alive and a white carnation if their mother had gone to the beyond. She remembered this fondly and made me wonder just how much we really appreciate our mothers.

We still live in a time when mothers aren't always valued for the sacrifice they give to their families and communities. According to the Mother's Index Rankings from Save the Children survey, some mother's garner more respect than others when it comes to health, education, and political status, in addition to how much maternity leave and pay their countries give them.

Don't be surprised to see that Turkey ranks in the lower half of 66 countries in Tier II for some areas, but not so bad when compared to the U.S. in Tier I. The three tiers were broken down by More Developed Countries (41), Less Developed Countries (66), and Least Developed Countries (33) giving index ranks for mothers, women and children.

altinkumTurkey's overall figures: 46, 54, 21 which means out of 66 countries, they ranked 46 on the Mother's Index; 54 on the Women's, and 21 for children. I guess you're luckier if you live in Turkey and you happen to be a child. But let's look at the figures for how the U.S. looks in comparison: 26, 21, 30. Ouch!
This means that among the 41 Tier I countries, the U.S. stands at 26 for mothers; 21 for women, and a pathetic 30 for children.

So when all's said and done, children are king in Turkey, but unfortunately, mortality rates for live births stand at 29 per 1,000 there and only 7 in 1,000 in the U.S. Turkish women fair worse compared to women in America in both education and the ratio of income to men's income. Turkish women get 10 years of education while American women get 16 years.

The tally for income: Turkey .35 percent of men's income; U.S. .62 percent. Both are grim statistics and both countries need to work on that factor. I now wonder even more:

Do we really love and respect our mothers very much? 13/05/08
