Denizkoy is a real traditional Turkish Village, where family and frendship is lifes main priority. A real close knit community living with old family values. It isnt rare to see grabe vinesin every garden and apples on the trees.

Smoking ban in all bars, restaurants and coffeehouses by mid 2009 in Turkey

Parliament approved a law Thursday extending a smoking ban in this tobacco-growing nation to all bars, restaurants and coffeehouses by mid 2009. The new law backed by the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will prohibit smoking in all enclosed public areas next year. Turkey already bans smoking on buses, airplanes and large offices, and within four months, it will be prohibited on taxis, ferries, trains and some open air locations such as stadiums and playgrounds. The new law must now be approved by the president. Tayyip Erdogan's government originally proposed enforcing the smoking ban in cafes and restaurants this year, but postponed it until mid 2009 after complaints from businesses.

Today is one of the biggest holidays for Muslims

Today is one of the biggest holidays for Muslims. It's called Kurban Bayrami, which could be translated "feast of the sacrifice."  Muslims will gather at the mosque for special morning prayers, followed by a smorgasbord of edible delights. On Fiday and Saturday, there will be a barbecue, picnic and activities for children and adults. There are two major festivals on the Islamic calendar. Kurban Bayrami is a celebration marking the end of the Ramadan fast. Eid al-Adha comes at the end of the pilgrimage some Muslims make each year to Mecca. Eid al-Adha honors the willingness of the prophet Abraham to follow God's orders, even to the point of sacrificing his son when God asked him to. According to the Quran (and the Bible), God, in the end, told Abraham to kill a sheep instead of his child.

We took one Greek dog home with us to Holland

1,5 years ago I went to the Greek isle of Crete and was amazed about the attitude of the Greek people towards dogs and cats. So different from most people in Western Europe... We took one Greek dog home with us to Holland and we still are very happy with him (as he is with us!).
As I could not understand the warmhearted Greek people with their attitude towards dogs, I wrote an open letter to some Greek newspapers. Besides both newspapers placed my letter, even one of the editors  - a doglover himself - consented in a monthly column in his Crete Gazette. The Greek people react very enthousiastic about the stories.

Christmas and New year's day celebrations in Altinkum Turkey

New year's day is celebrated in Altinkum Didim and  Turkey, very much like it is celebrated anywhere in the world. After all, it is yet another opportunity to have a holiday and enjoy ourselves. You can see large groups of people outside, counting down the seconds as loudly as possible during the last seconds of the year. However, there is also some opposition to new year celebrations because it is a Christian custom. New year's day is universal as much as the calendar we use goes, so it does not make much sense to say that new year's day celebrations are something 'Christian'. The real reason for this opposition is that people generally confuse new year's day celebrations in Europe and US with the Christmas celebrations.
