Japan is one of my goals "suspended", postponed for a long-term due to the tragedy that struck the country in March. It's been months and Japan has been extremely responsive in dealing with all the consequences of the disaster, daily life has resumed its course, the flights were reactivated (and tariffs significantly downsized, now tickets are averagely less than 500 €), but many wonder if the risks are still too high to deal with taking on such a journey.
My first suggestion is to constantly monitor the card's website "Travel Safe" located in Japan, managed directly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where every day all the latest news on weather hazards, earthquakes, political events, health and safety of its the country are published.
For the weather conditions in particular, visit the Japanese Meteorological website and other travel blogs or travel news websites. For the exact levels of radiation every day in Tokyo area, please visit the website of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health. The safety of food and drinking water has been under the threshold of concern for some time lately.
Restrictive measures were in fact adopted for imports of all vegetable and animal substances from the surrounding area of Fukushima, still evacuated within a radius of 20km. However, the U.S. government - endorsed by the Italian - continues to maintain a very conservative approach by recommending to remain at a safe distance of at least 80 km. Tokyo is at least 200 km away, so there would be no reason to stay away from it.
After initially reading the data published there would be no valid reason for further delay of a trip to Japan, but in the past the authority and reliability of internal sources has sparked some doubt ... so our suggestion is to be patient for a while, account for all available sources and make a decision weighing all factors.
While waiting and considering the idea of starting this long term travel, review all the ideas of our blog in order to find out the best, most extravagant spots without going bankrupt!
